| Subject: | IMPORTANT, QUICK RESPONSE NEEDED PLEASE: BBSRC Advanced Life Sciences Research Technologies initiative (ALERT 13) - research equipment call |

as you might have seen, the BBSRC has just announced a
dedicated call for instrumentation to be deployed on
                a multi-project/multi-use basis (see below) - an
excellent opportunity to upgrade our facility to respond to
your latest needs. The funding (£250-750k) would cover one
new bit of high-end equipment, so we need to decide where
strongest needs will be in the coming years.

That's where your input is needed: Please let me know what
kind of experiments you would like to do in the future that
you can't do currently in FILM, where major investment would
make a big difference to your research. Ideas put up before were a commercial
              super-resolution microscope, high-throughput
microscope, dedicated intravital microscope - but feedback
on any unmet needs is appreciated.

The deadline is soon and it's a busy time of the year, so
            please let me know within
a week what your thoughts are (please reply
to me personally, not the whole mailing list).

Looking forward to your input, good imaging,

            Martin

Research Technologies initiative (ALERT 13) -
                      research equipment call
Dear
                        all,
I
can confirm that the BBSRC capital equipment
call has now gone live, please see http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/opportunities/2013/alert13.aspx
for full details. The closing date for
                        applications is 4pm on 23 July 2013.
BBSRC
are inviting applications for research grants
from eligible researchers with a strong
track record of research in the BBSRC remit,
to purchase items of advanced research
equipment via this Advanced Life Sciences
Research Technology 2013 (ALERT 13) call. The
capital equipment budget for this call is
                        approximately £8M.
Applications
for equipment funding, which will typically be
in the range of £250k-£750k excl. VAT although
higher value applications will be considered
with prior agreement, and must enhance the
capability of the UK research base in areas of
science in the BBSRC remit. Applications will
typically be from groups of researchers in one
or more eligible institutions, for instrumentation
to be deployed on a multi-project/multi-use
                            basis.
When
BBSRC recently visited they indicated that they
would like to see some degree of coordination of
bids by universities, but the details of this
internal coordination are still to be confirmed.
I’m guessing that a number of applicants may
have already started preparing bids following
the pre-announcement that you received directly
from BBSRC and/or from me. Please feel free to
forward as appropriate, and for now please
encourage any potential applicants to contact me
                        (r.nadal@imperial.ac.uk)
to alert me about their bid.
Many
                        thanks.
Best
                        wishes,
Becky.
