Dear microscopists, we're almost there now, at the Christmas break, and many of you are already away. Over the holidays of course the FILM crew needs a rest as well, I will be away from tomorrow, Mark from Thursday and Steve from Friday, when the College closes. If anyone wants to use the microscopes, they will be accessible by swipecards, but be warned that the building will be pretty cold. And before we leave: We hope you had a good year, got good work done and, most importantly, have enjoyed it! In the name of the FILM crew I wish you a happy Christmas - or whatever you call the celebration when life gets brighter again - and a good start into a hopefully also happy new year. Dear microscopists, you may have wondered what happened to our annual FILM Image Of The Year competition? It hasn't disappeared, just slightly postponed. Because the end of the year is usually a hectic time for everybody, I decided to have it slightly later this time, the deadline will be end of January. Details have to be confirmed, but Invitrogen have already agreed to sponsor it again, so you can look forward to nice price(s) and calendars. For those of you new to FILM, this competition is awarding the most impressive and beautiful microscopy images, as judged by an external jury including members from the Natural HIstory Museum and Tate Modern. For previous winners, see our gallery on the FILM website. I'll send you more information early in January, but start browsing through your best images taken in FILM in 2010. Dear microscopists, after a long time of preparation and collecting of information, we can finally and proudly introduce the FILM WIKI, containing a huge amount of information helpful for planning your microscopy experiments and setting up the microscopes for acquisition: # objective lens specifications, including NA, working distance, spectral transmission curves # exact filter cube specifications (excitation filters, dichroic mirrors, emission filters) # spectral properties of excitation light sources (mercury lamps, xenon lamps, lasers) # exact specifications of cameras (resolution, pixel dimensions, spectral range, ...) I had started this database in the early days of FILM but never managed to get very far. Christian then stepped in and created the current WIKI, which Steve then started to fill up, and Mark has now finally managed to collect and complete all bits of information from all our microscopes and other hardware - thanks a lot to everybody! The link is on the FILM website under LINKS (<http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/imagingfacility/links>) and on every microscope page. I hope you will find the information useful. And if you come across an error or something missing, please let us know, with so many details that's easily possible. Optogenetics works by imparting light sensitivity onto blind neurons by transgenic expression of light sensitive ion channels or ion pumps that are then remotely activated by flashes of light. The presentation will introduce the Optogenetic technology and will describe the development of a technique that enable complex spatiotemporal stimulation patterns for studying neural network dynamics, neuronal disorders and for neural prosthesis applications. [FILM-Users 00007] FILM recharges 2010-Q3

Dear microscopists, the FILM recharges for the second quarter of 2010 are being finalised, the journals will be done by the finance administrators of the various faculties in the next days. No action from you is required, but if you want to have an overview of your usage and charges, you can easily see all this information and get summaries on the Sharepoint / FILM website. For usage instructions, see FILM website / GUIDELINES / CHARGES / SHAREPOINT INSTRUCTIONS. If you are having problems, please let me know. On this occasion, a reminder: While most of you are very reliable users (thank you!!), there are a few individual users who don't always stick to the rules, e.g. not notifying other users when they change bookings at short-notice, staying longer without updating the booking, not showing up for the booked session etc. If you are one of them, please change your behaviour in the future: First, it can be a serious problem for other users if the microscope is booked and not used while they are struggling to get on it. Second, it's not fair to other users, the more people use the microscopes, the cheaper it is for everyone, unpaid usage drives up the costs for everybody else. Third, if you try to save on charges, that's pointless anyway, because all booking changes and microscope usage are logged, and for recharging I go through the logs and adjust the booking to the actual usage, or change it back to the original booking if it has been changed without notification. However, this is very time consuming, so please make sure you follow the rules more reliably in the future. You can find the latest version of the rules in the FILM USER GUIDELINES on our website. These studentships are funded jointly by the ICB and AstraZeneca (AZ). A minimum of 4 AZ-ICB studentships will be funded. These studentships are in addition to the regular annual ICB DTC studentships. The application deadline for this call is *Friday 12^th November 5pm*. Please find the application guidelines and the application form attached. All studentships awarded under this scheme will be part of the ICB DTC and the students will receive the full DTC education and training programme over the four years. The studentships will be jointly funded and assessed by the ICB and AZ. All of the usual criteria of the ICB DTC studentships should be addressed in any application. However, rather than focussing only on protein-protein interactions proposals can address the wider remit of the ICB, namely molecular interactions in biology.
