Dear users, As you know Easter is coming, and FILM will be closing Wednesday 23rd in the afternoon and re-opening Thursday 31st in the morning. During this period, we do not encourage users to book the microscopes, as no one will be around if there is something happening. However, it is possible if you have the following in place: * Appropriate Lone Working Authorisation * Risk Assessment (including "buddy") * Relevant authorisations and access to the building We emphasize that if something is left on, it will be the responsibility of the user. Please ensure you switch everything off correctly before leaving, and if you cancel a session, please inform the person before personally so they can switch off the microscopes. Please see the attached document regarding the closures at SAF. There will be no heating. All the best, David

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the 4th EMBL Master Course for Bioimage Data Analysis to be held from Sunday, 5 June - Saturday ,11 June 2016. The deadline for registration is April 15th, 2016. This course will focus on computational methods for analysing images of proteins, cells and tissues, to boost the learning process of participants who have an immediate need to analyze images in their own research. For this, the course extends from basic foundations of image processing and programming to the actual implementation of workflows using scripting in ImageJ macro and Matlab languages. We aim to gather expert knowledge to organize a world-leading course for image analysis in the fields of cell & developmental biology, biochemistry and biophysics. A report written by a student in 2014 could give you some idea about the course. The course will take place in Heidelberg, Germany at the EMBL Advanced Training Center. Registration and motivation letter deadline is April 15, 2016. FYI: for those interested in the ESRIC super-resolution summer school, there are now travel bursaries – see below. Round Two of registration for the Super-Resolution 5-day residential course is OPEN and will close on March 31st! Thanks to the Wellcome Trust’s support this year we are going to be able to offer Travel Bursaries to Post Doctorate researchers to help offset the cost of attending the course. The amount available will be dependent on the number accepted but will be in the region of £150 - £250. The course is designed to give participants a thorough grounding in super-resolution microscopy in an informal and intimate setting. It brings together leading academics and the major suppliers of super-resolution microscopes to provide expertise and guidance in structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), AiryScan Microscopy and single molecule localization microscopies (PALM, sptPALM and dSTORM). The summer school will include informal lectures on the theory of these approaches, the benefits and limitations of each technology and how they can be applied to real world biological research questions. This will be supported by extensive hands on workshops, using the latest equipment, from the major microscopy suppliers. [Registration is now open for] Imaging Life 2016 2nd Annual Bio-imaging Postgraduate Symposium Friday 10th June 2016 The Diamond Building, Lecture Theatre 5 and Workspace 2 The Imagine Group at the University of Sheffield invite you to register for our 2nd annual Postgraduate Symposium - Imaging Life 2016. We are a cross disciplinary group of researchers working in the various sub-fields of Bio-imaging, ranging across Super-resolution Optical Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and Probe Chemistry. The symposium will host talks and presentations on a wide array of research with a common theme of 'Developments in Biological Imaging'. The one-day event will take place on Friday the 10th of June 2016, 9:30 - 17:30. Our venue this year is The Diamond, Lecture Theatre 5 and the Diamond Workspace 2, at the University of Sheffield. The programme will include talks alongside a poster presentation and an image competition, ending with a closing wine reception. Catering will be provided on the day.
