Dear Users, Just a reminder that we will host a five day workshop with Nikon, with a showcase on the High-Content system and a demo of the iSIM live-cell super-resolution system. There are still places left to book sessions with Nikon Imaging Specialists on both microscopes, please fill in the attached questionnaire and send to Emily or Natalia at Nikon. Nikon will be holding a five day workshop at FILM, Imperial College London on 24th - 30th November. The workshop will include: · Demonstrations of the iSIM - a new array-scanning confocal system from VisiTech International, enabling live cell imaging at super-resolution. · Showcase of the new High Content System, Nikon Eclipse Ti-E with C2 Confocal, located in the FILM- sessions focusing on the use of JOBS software · Seminar on the iSIM and Nikon high content software JOBS Please see the attached flyers for more information and details on how to book your workshop session with a Nikon Imaging Specialist. Dear Users, Just to remind you of the upcoming Young Life Scientists' symposium on Friday 28th October. There are about 10 places left for this exciting event! Please see below to register. All the best, David Dear YLS 2016 attendees, We are writing to remind you of the upcoming YLS 2016 Symposium "Advanced Imaging with Light Microscopy: Capturing Tissues to Single Molecules". We still have some remaining places for abstract submissions for either a poster or oral presentation, with amazing prizes for the winners. We strongly encourage as many people as possible to submit abstracts before the deadline on Friday 7th October, so why not give it a go? We would also like to encourage you to submit light microscopy images for the image competition. Zeiss have very kindly offered an incredible prize for the best image and in the field of light microscopy, seeing IS believing! Please provide a maximum of 2 images in high enough resolution to be printed at size A4 in either .TIF or .png formats. Presenting a poster, giving an oral presentation or displaying an image provides the perfect way to initiate discussions and foster new collaborations. Focusing on application of emerging advanced imaging techniques, image analysis and current research into imaging complex cellular processes, the YLS Symposium 2016 will cover a wide range of techniques and their applications, together with sample preparation and post-acquisition analysis workshops. Keynote speakers feature Prof. Francesco Pavone, Laurent Cognet and Lothar Schermelleh, who will present their cutting edge research and major achievements during plenary lectures, followed by a Q&A session. The programme also includes oral presentations selected from abstracts, a poster session, an image competition (prizes would be given) and a discussion panel. Dear FILM users, FILM has recently undergone the annual Health & Safety review and while we have passed with "very good", H&S asked us to clarify some of our policies and you will find them below and in the updated FILM user guide on the internet. Please read these carefully and follow them accordingly. We also put up some new signs regarding waste disposal and the location of the nearest hand washing facilities in the microscope rooms. Furthermore, the cabinet in room 409 (widefield microscopes) is only to be used as a working area and not as a safety cabinet (as it is not certified for such use)! Please make sure that all containers with liquid are labelled with content and your name, even if they contain only distilled water! Lab coats Lab coats must be worn when carrying out any wet lab or in vivo work and when working with organisms requiring higher containment levels; green lab coats are for working with animals. Biological Waste disposal Only class 1 waste can be disposed of in the orange bins provided in the microscope rooms. The appropriate disposal of GM / class 2 and animal waste is the responsibility of the users. GM / class 2 waste must not be disposed in the orange bins unless it has been chemically deactivated or autoclaved. Lone working When using the FILM facility outside the normal hours (07:00 - 19:00 from Monday to Friday) the College's Out of Hours and Lone Working Policies apply and it is the responsibility of the user to get prior authorisation from his or her supervisor and complete a risk assessment. Copies of both, authorisation and risk assessment, have to be shown to FILM staff prior to commencement of the lone working. Dear FILM Community, I just wanted to formally welcome Andreas Bruckbauer who has joined us as maternity cover for Debbi and will be managing FILM. Andreas will be glad to meet as many of you as possible over the coming weeks and months. Particularly, at the moment we are preparing an application to The Wellcome Trust for a Zeiss 880 with Airyscan to replace our ageing and no-longer-supported LSM510 and Andreas would love to hear from anyone who has potential applications for the 880/Airyscan.
