Cheers Debbi Advances in optical coherence tomography: translation of OCT technology from bench to bedside Zhongping Chen Department of Biomedical Engineering Beckmann Laser Institute The Edwards Life Sciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is one of the fastest growing areas of biomedical optics with many potential clinical applications. The recent development of Fourier domain OCT has significantly increased the imaging speed and sensitivity, and has enabled real-time 3-D imaging. The innovations in light source, detector, miniature probe, and image processing have greatly extended the clinical applications of OCT technology. Many of the functional extensions of OCT technology that were developed in the last decade, such as Doppler OCT, Polarization sensitivity OCT, and Phase resolved OCT, started to generate clinically important information in clinical studies. I will report several on-going research projects in my laboratory that focus on translating OCT technology to solve specific clinical problems. The new innovations, such as optical coherence elastography and multimodality intravascular imaging will be described. The challenges and opportunities in translational research will be discussed. Brief Biography: [chenmodified]Dr. Zhongping Chen is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the OCT Laboratory at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Co-founder and Chairman of OCT Medical Imaging Inc. Dr. Chen received his B.S. degree in Applied Physics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1982, his M. S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1987, and his Ph.D. degree in Applied Physics from Cornell University in 1993. Dr. Chen's research interests encompass the areas of biomedical photonics, microfabrication, biomaterials and biosensors. His research group has pioneered the development of functional optical coherence tomography, which simultaneously provides high resolution 3-D images of tissue structure, blood flow, and birefringence. These functional extensions of OCT offer contrast enhancements and provide mapping of many clinically important parameters. In addition, his group has developed a number of endoscopic and intravascular rotational and linear miniature probes for OCT and MPM imaging and translated this technology to clinical applications. He has led numerous major research projects funded by NIH, NSF, DOD, and DARPA, including several interdisciplinary research projects such as the NIH Biomedical Research Partnership (BRP) grant and NSF Biophotonics Partnership Initiative grant. Currently, he is the principal investigator of Four NIH R01 grants. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and review articles and holds a number of patents in the fields of biomaterials, biosensors, and biomedical imaging. Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), a Fellow of SPIE, and a Fellow of the Optical Society of America.

The fellowships are funded by EMBL and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Cofund Grant from the EU, providing young scientists with three years secured funding. Successful candidates will pursue interdisciplinary projects, transferring techniques to a new context or connecting scientific fields that are usually separate, across at least two labs at the five EMBL sites. Dear Users, You might have seen him around, or heard him at the Match-Maker during Microscopy Day, but I wanted to make you aware that Yuriy Alexandrov has joined FILM for an initial 6 month period during which he can assist you with advanced image analysis. Yuriy has experience in Matlab programming, mathematical modelling, principal component analysis, pattern recognition, statistical models and much more. Due to his expertise, he is available to provide support for the existing image processing packages and develop scripting and informatics approaches tailored to your needs for more advanced and complex imaging projects. Yuriy will be at Comp2 FILM analysis computer in South Ken from Mondays to Wednesdays noon and you can come and chat with him about your image analysis questions, or just shoot him an email at y.alexandrov(a)imperial.ac.uk<mailto:y.alexandrov@imperial.ac.uk>. He has already helped provide a couple of solutions to users, your problem could be next! :) For people thinking of doing high-content imaging, or trying to identify different populations or behaviours from microscopy images, this is a good opportunity. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, and if the demand is there we will try to convert this temporary post into a more permanent role to assist users in advanced image analysis.
