Dear Users. We will have our last demo next week from Tuesday June 2nd to Friday June 5th. As before, the registration excel sheet is on \\film-nas.med.ic.ac.uk\scratch\_HCS demo<file:///\\film-nas.med.ic.ac.uk\scratch\_HCS%20demo> REGISTER to demo with your samples :) Some of you will be familiar with the Zeiss system as it is very similar to the Hammersmith HWF1 widefield. The Cell Observer system is based on a Axio Observer.Z1 inverted microscope and comprises: - with motorised focus; Definite Focus for focus hold system; - Motorised X,Y stage with inserts for slides, dishes and well plates; - LED light source with LEDs and filters for the range of dyes we discussed previously plus a metal halide system for additional wavelength selection; - Incubation chamber for sample temperature maintenance; - a range of objectives - both high NA for maximum quality plus some long working distance objectives for use with thicker plastic vessels. - ZEN imaging workstation with a Hamamatsu Orca FLASH 4 camera & we will be able to show the functionality of ZEN for feedback experiments. The software should also enables setting up different acquisition parameters as well as segmentation feedback into the acquisiont. I would strongly encourage you to come with your samples and test the system! It is the last one! :) If there are any questions, please let me know! Dear FILM-users, I am happy to inform you that the 2015 Microscopy Day will take place on Tuesday 23rd of June from 10am - 5pm in G34 (SAF-SK). Mark it in your calendar! Details about the program will follow shortly, but confirmed speakers include Nick Barry (LMB Cambridge) on conditional high-content imaging and plenary speaker Willy Supatto (LOB Ecole Polytechnique, Paris) on multiphoton SPIM imaging! And because there is plenty of good science happening at Imperial as well, we will again have the famous Microscopy Matchmaker Session, where you can present in 3 min the microscopy you are doing for your project! Many collaborations have originated from this match-making, and it is a great opportunity to learn what is going on around you. Send me an email if you want to participate to this session! So, save the date and see you there! [FILM-Users 00566] IMPORTANT: Health & Safety issue at FILM

Dear Users, This message is relevant to ALL users. This morning when emptying the regular trash in the confocal rooms (meant for lens tissue, paper, normal tissue, etc), I made the discovery of gloves, a full set of slides, with mounting medium leaking everywhere (see attached pictures), and to top it off a series of glass coverslips in the CF4 trash bin. As all the microscopy room are equipped with specific sharps bins and specific biological waste bins, I must assume that the person who trashed those items was too lazy to take the 3-4 steps to the appropriate bins or did not care. This behaviour is not tolerable and consists a serious health & safety issue: - I could have cut myself, not knowing there were slides in the regular trash; I would had to report it to H&S, have it examined, make sure there was nothing toxic in it (DAPI in mounting medium is a DNA-intercalating dye), fill out mountains of paper-work preventing me to attend to the daily work of the facility. - the cleaner who empties the bin could have cut him/herself, and this could have led to a legal issue for the college in addition to some distress for the person (it has happened in the past). This can not happen again. So here a reminder of H&S rules: - All FILM rooms are biological safety level 1 rooms, the same as your labs. It implies no eating or drinking in there, and separation of biological and non-biological waste, which should be standard lab practice. If you are unsure about good lab practice, ask your lab manager. - For lens paper, tissue, paper, etc use the regular trash bin (brown ones) - For gloves, tissue that was in contact with biological or chemical material, left over mounting medium, multi-well plates, plastic Pasteur pipettes use the orange biological bin (no liquid in it please). If your multi-well plates still have media in it, take it back to your lab to dispose of the liquid appropriately - liquid is not meant for the orange plastic bags. - For pipette tips, slides, ibidi dishes, glass coverslips use the yellow/orange sharps plastic container. It is made of "solid" plastic that won't be perforated by sharps, unlike the orange plastic bags. - If you don't know where the bins are or are unsure where you have to trash your item, or you find something is missing, come and ask us! I hope I won't have to write this message again and that the person responsible for the mess on the CF4 bin will take better care and come forward so we can go over the Health & Safety regulations of the Facility with him/her. Dear Users, We will be demoing the Image Xpress Micro<http://www.moleculardevices.com/systems/high-content-imaging/imagexpress-mi…> high-content system from Molecular Devices next week, with available slots from Tuesday 12th May at 9:30 pm until Thursday 14th at 4pm The microscope has an environmental chamber (CO2, Temperature), so you can come with your live cells. It can accommodate plates and dishes and slides should be feasible as well. It is equipped with several extra long working distance lenses (4x - 60x) as well as phase contrast 10x and 20x. Though it is a widefield system, it has a "digital confocal mode" which is basically on-th-fly deconvolution to increase the signal-to-noise of your widefield images (just ask Steve for his favourite deconvolved WF images to get an idea). The software should also enables setting up different acquisition parameters as well as whole plate analysis and segmentation. I would strongly encourage you to come with your samples and test the system! A booking diary is available on Scratch, in the folder "_HCS demo" with the name "Image Xpress Demo Booking Diary". This is the fore-last demo, the last one will be the Zeiss widefield system on June 2nd-5th Looking forward to seeing you there! Cheers Debbi Dear Prof. Magee and Dr. Keller, Being aware of the activity related to microscopy at FILM, I would like to introduce an initiative that the users of your facilities could find interesting. Due to 2015 being the International Year of Light, Heriot-Watt University is organising Spot-On-Micro, a new micrograph image contest that aims to create spaces for sharing microscopy images and the science and art behind them via public exhibition. The main target is to use the images as a powerful resource to share Science with the general public and raise awareness of the importance of research in such small universes. For this, a selection of the best images will be publicly exhibited. If you, or anybody in your institution, have artistic micrographs obtained through any microscopy technique, don't hesitate to submit them to win cash awards and publicise your research. The contest has the following awards: 1st Award: £250 2nd Award: £150 3rd Award: £100 People's Award: £200 The period for submission of images is now open until the 27th May 2015.
