Mosher Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University. He was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, for his research into fluoroscopy. In normal microscopes the wavelength of light sets a limit to the level of detail possible. However this limitation can be circumvented by methods that make use of fluorescence, a phenomenon in which certain substances become luminous after having been exposed to light. Around 2000, Eric Betzig and William E Moerner helped create a method in which fluorescence in individual molecules is steered by light. An image of very high resolution is achieved by combining images in which different molecules are activated. This makes it possible to track processes occurring inside living cells. Professor Moerner has conducted research in the areas of physical chemistry and biophysics of single molecules and is actively involved in the development of 2D and 3D super-resolution imaging for cell biology. Imaging studies include protein superstructures in bacteria, structure of huntingtin protein aggregates, centriole proteins, and ion channel distributions. Using a powerful microscope optimized for tracking of single objects in cells, the motions of DNA and RNA are being measured in three dimensions in real time to understand processing and binding interactions. A related research area concerns precise analysis of photodynamics of single trapped biomolecules in solution, with applications to photosynthesis, electron transport catalysis, and diffusion/mobility transport measurements. [FILM-Users 00595] movies for putative music video

Dear Users, This is a bit out of the ordinary, but FILM has been contacted to help provide materials for a video for the band Mystery Jets<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Jets>. The producers are looking for movies of tissue, organisms, etc showing "growth", "accumulation" . Movies of growing plants, cell colonies, dancing cells, cells in zebrafish, accumulation of cells in tissue (cancer cells?) etc... could be useful. If you have movies you think could be used, please place them in my scratch folder "_DKeller Microscopes\_MYSTERY JETS by Monday evening. The folder also contains a synopsis of what the director would like to do - more artistic than scientific, but microscopy is art :) No specifics will be communicated so your science will be safe - if you have questions, contact me. I will show them to the producer and if they decide to choose one or the other, you will be appropriately acknowledged on the video. [FILM-Users 00593] microscopes, liquids and oil

Dear Users, The WF2 will be out of order until further notice. Attached you can see the reason why: massive corrosion at the bottom of the microscope. This means that liquid went all the way from the objective, the filter turret and ended up on the slider. This is most likely not due to a single incident. We are waiting to hear from Zeiss whether this can be repaired locally or whether the entire microscope has to be sent to Germany - which might not fall under our service warranty. To be seen... >> All WF2 users, please contact us (film-service(a)imperial.ac.uk<mailto:film-service@imperial.ac.uk>) so we can transfer you onto other machines. Similarly on CF4, a Leica engineer had to clean a mirror under the objective turret as it was full of oil. Had it not been spotted, it could have led to some more damage similar to WF2. In order to keep our microscopes functioning and our users happy, we need all of you to pay extra attention when handling liquids and oil: - Only put a small drop of oil on your coverslips, it is plenty. - remove the oil after you are done from all objectives where it was used and from your slide. - Be extra careful when handling liquids, plates or dishes with media, fluidics. - Always report a spill, as tiny as it might be - if unchecked some liquid can infiltrate the body of the microscope and lead to the corrorsion we saw on WF2. - When in doubt, ask us. Do not hesitate to ask us if you are unsure. [FILM-Users 00592] URGENT QUICK RESPONSE NEEDED: Wellcome Trust Multi-User Equipment grant

Dear microscopists, The Wellcome Trust has just opened a call for "Multi-user equipment grant" (deadline 20th November). We were successful in 2014 in obtaining it (upgrades to CF3/CF4, high-content imaging system & post for David) but think it might still be an excellent opportunity to further upgrade our facility to respond to your latest needs. The grant is intended to cover purchase and running costs of major equipment (up to £1 million, including up to 5 years running costs), which gives us an opportunity to cover unmet long-term needs ie any piece of equipment that would be essential for your research or enable you to do really cool experiments! We would like to have your input on: - the kind of experiments you would like to do in the future that you can't do currently in FILM, - where major investment would make a big difference to your research. We already have some ideas, in particular given that the LSM510 will come out of support from Zeiss and is fairly old, one piece of equipment we are thinking of applying for is the new Zeiss Airy scan confocal<http://www.zeiss.com/microscopy/en_us/products/confocal-microscopes/lsm-880…> (inverted) and/or upgrade the HCF1 with the Airy Scan detector. Previous ideas put up were: - lightsheet microscope, - intravital imaging - dedicated long-term imaging microscopes (e.g Nikon Biostation<http://nikon.com/about/technology/life/instruments/biostation/index.htm> or similar Incucyte, etc) - spinning disk confocal - flow imaging but feedback on any unmet needs is appreciated. Don't forget any microscopy-related needs such as data processing and image analysis. IMPORTANT: if you are a Wellcome Trust grant holder and would agree to be a co-applicant, this would greatly enhance our chances. The deadline is soon and it's a busy time of the year, so please let me know within a week what your thoughts are (please reply to me personally, not the whole mailing list). This event brings together medical imaging researchers at ICL and beyond and allows an international leader in biomedical imaging to address the college imaging community. Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Visions of Life Professor Jürgen Hennig Jürgen Hennig is a German chemist and medical physicist, internationally renowned for his work as one of the pioneers of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for clinical diagnostics. He is an alumnus of Imperial and also studied at the universities of Stuttgart, Munich and Freiburg, where he currently works as Scientific Director of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Chairman of the Magnetic Resonance Development and Application Center. His awards include the Biosciences and Medicine Max Planck Research Award (2003), the highest scientific award of Taiwan - Tsung Ming Tu Award (2010), and an Einstein professorship from the Chinese Academy of Science (2011). This progress is being driven by innovative technologies as well as new challenges and opportunities arising from the rapid development in biomedical research. MRI not only produces good images, but it also enables non-invasive measurement and visualization of metabolic, microstructural, functional and physiological processes. These offer the potential for studying the multiple parameters associated with normal and disease processes, with applications to areas of medical research including neuroscience, cardiology and metabolic disease. Multiparametric MRI imaging provides an ideal and necessary supplement to genetic profiling and personalized medicine. In conjunction with other imaging techniques, MRI adds a spatiotemporal dimension to the spatially non-specific information provided by genetics. The importance of this can be seen through analysing the genetic heterogeneity of tumors, and MRI allows the detailed study of changes in phenotype caused by genetic modifications in animal models. The richness of phenotype modifications caused by even very isolated genetic changes is ample demonstration that the interrelation of molecular factors with the systemic level is much more than a simple one-to-one correspondence. The clever and creative use of new nano- and microtechnologies has already led to unprecedented improvements in imaging quality and imaging speed as well as new concepts in spatial encoding and the widespread use of high power graphical processor units. The introduction of new technologies is expected to lead to incremental improvements in current approaches to MRI, as well as new applications. Although MRI has come a long way since its early stages, it still has far to go. The Hounsfield Lecture Advances in biomedical imaging technology have allowed tremendous progress in diagnostic and surgical imaging since the first X-ray. Each new development has been based on fundamental scientific progress in science and engineering, resulting in Nobel prizes in medicine for the non-medically trained inventors of techniques such as CT and MRI. Activity that brings together scientists, engineers and clinicians can promote further technological breakthroughs. The Hounsfield Lecture is one such opportunity and allows an international leader in biomedical imaging to address the college imaging community. The event acts as a focus to bring together medical imaging researchers at ICL and beyond and features a poster viewing event and competition that attracts high numbers of submissions from across all faculties. The inaugural event was presented in 2005 and the last was in 2009. Past speakers at the event include James Fujimoto, Rakesh K Jain, Peter Hunter, Sam Gambhir and Robert Balaban.
