In this sense, IIT's scientific program is based in the combination of the basic scientific research with the development of technical applications, a major inspirational principle. The research areas cover scientific topics of high innovative content, which represent the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application possibilities in various fields ranging from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences, and nanobiotechnology. Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral position on the study of molecular dynamics for sub-diffraction imaging and lithography techniques by means of the RESOLFT Concept. The project stems from a strong collaboration between the department of Nanophysics at the IIT in Genoa and the Center for Nano Science and Technology at the IIT @Polimi in Milan. The project aims to unveil the limitations in the switching mechanisms of the existing RESOLFT methods in order to propose innovative solutions, both in terms of ad hoc molecular systems and photophysical processes, for the design of cutting-edge nanoscopy set-ups. The candidate will be responsible both for the photophysical characterization of the active materials involved in the RESOLFT process by time resolved optical spectroscopy and for the design and realization of an optical setup to perform fluorescence imaging and lithographic measurements with sub-diffraction resolution. The applicant should have a PhD in physics and/or engineering with good knowledge of physical chemistry. Experience in the field of molecular spectroscopy and/or optical microscopy is required. She/he must have a strong attitude to work in an interdisciplinary team and will be available to travelling between Genoa and Milan according to experimental needs. Main working laboratory is at the Department of Nanophysics at the Central Research Laboratories of IIT, Genoa. Duration of the project is 2 years. When you walk into the Fleming Building, walk PAST the stairs (not up), then turn right to the lifts and go up to the first floor. Up there, just turn left and you are there. We've had a few presentations about the basic principles of super-resolutions microscopy and PALM in previous FILM Clubs and Microscopy Days, but Mirella will go a step further and go further in depth with regard to issues specific for STORM, but also very interesting for all other kinds of microscopy, like photo-physical properties of fluorescent dyes, dark states and photobleaching, calculating the resolution, visualising the localisation precision and more. Several Member States are demanding severe cuts on the total EU budget and research will have to compete with other policy priorities. This is a time when we, the scientific community, should act together and make our case to protect research funding, including that of the European Research Council (ERC), from cuts. Decisions will be prepared in discussions among politicians at the national level. All of us must look for opportunities to affect these decisions and send a strong signal to the heads of state or government. An open letter signed by European Nobel laureates has been published in top European newspapers this week. The impact of this letter will be increased if it is followed by a mobilization of the national scientific communities. Dear microscopists, in a major drive to improve the service of FILM, we have reviewed the workflow within the facility, taken into account feedback from users, tested various solution, and are now introducing some major improvements to the way we communicate with our users, speed up processing of equipment issues and keep users better informed. In detail, we are introducing the following innovations NEW EMAIL ADDRESS <film-service(a)imperial.ac.uk>: With this email address you reach all FILM staff, whoever has time first will get back to you. This can be used for all requests like training requests, equipment problems, support or anything else NEW ISSUE TRACKING system <https://share.imperial.ac.uk/fom/NHLI/Facilities/FILM/Lists/FILM Service Issues>: Under this Sharepoint link, you can get up-to-date information about all microscope problems and similar issues. The list will be constantly updated with all action taken by FILM staff or service engineers, so you know what's going on, when issues are likely to be fixed, so you can better plan your experiments and work around problems. You can sort and search the list by equipment, status, issue, date and more. And as with every Sharepoint list, you can also set an ALERT for this list, so you get an automated email whenever something happens. On each microscope page, there is now also a link, specifically filtered for that equipment. NEW 'KNOWN ISSUES' LIST ON FILM WIKI <https://wiki.imperial.ac.uk/display/film/Home>: Some might already have discovered this, but on the bottom of each microscope's FILM WIKI page, there is now a list of KNOWN ISSUES, with self-help tips and workarounds for recurring minor problems. Experienced users might find quick solutions to frequent problems, like a button forgotten to switch on, plugging a licence dongle into a different USB port and the like, little things you don't need our help for if you. However, please always ask FILM staff for help if not needed or not sure! This tool is here to help experienced users to get the best out of their microscope time, but we are always happy to help whenever we are needed! I hope these tools will help make best use of our equipment, minimise downtimes and user frustration and streamline the communication. We hope you will like them, and we are very interested in your feedback - please let us know what you think, and if you have any ideas for further improvements.
