Dear microscopists,
first some information, during the College closure (from Friday until
Mon 2 January) the FILM crew will also be on holiday (I'm actually
already leaving tomorrow). You can still use the microscopes, but make
sure you book any unusual hardware configuration in advance, and
obviously we won't be around if anything goes wrong. From Tue 2 January
2012 we'll all be back as usual.
That leaves me to say - on behalf of the whole FILM crew - thanks for
the good collaboration. It was again a year full of interesting science,
beautiful images, new challenges, but most importantly many good times
sharing with you exciting new insights into some of the most weird and
wonderful aspects of life.
Have a happy and peaceful Christmas - or whatever you call this
celebration of light and life in the middle of winter - and a good start
into the new year, with more good imaging,
Martin

Dear microscopists,
if you are interested in more detailed information on our facility you
can have a look at the "FILM Report 2010-11", which is now available on
our website (under RESOURCES & DOWNLOADS > DOCUMENTS). This report is an
overview of technical developments, activities, organisation and
finances of the facility over the financial year 2010-11 (Aug '10 to Jul
'11).
Good imaging,
Martin

Dear microscopists,
the OMERO database is getting more and more useful features.
Especially the SCRIPTS are providing quite useful tools (luckily for us,
Mark Woodbridge in BSS is keeping them up to date and even tweaking them
if needed on our installation - thanks). Some of the latest additions are:
# BATCH IMAGE EXPORT: does exactly this, but with the options of
cropping time series or stacks, producing maximum projections or
re-mixing channels automatically for a whole collection of images
# RESTORE COLOURS: re-assigns the channel colours based on the
information in the original data file; by default, OMERO assigns the
'natural' colour corresponding to the wavelength, but that isn't helpful
e.g. if two fluorophores have the same emission (but different
excitation), or for brightfield image; this tool solves the problem for
Leica *.lif and Zeiss *.lsm files - for single files or automatically
for a whole dataset
# DEFINIENS EXPORT: exports images in OME-TIFF format compatible with
the Definiens software, including 3D and time series
# FIGURE scripts (various): make thumbnails, channel-split images or
other figures, as well as movies, for publication
You will find the scripts in the top-right corner of the user
interface (green arrow icon).
If you are interested, but not an OMERO user yet, you'll find more
information on the FILM website under LINKS > SOFTWARE:
