Professor VandeLinde signed on behalf of CHEST (Combined Higher Education Software Team) who negotiated the agreement, and are based at the University of Bath. Prof. Dr Clemens Jochum, Managing Director of Beilstein Informationssysteme GmbH, welcomed the initiative as a major technology enabler for the chemistry community in the United Kingdom. Jochum added 'the rapid take-up by the community and the overwhelming voice of support shown has been a great vindication of our efforts over the last two years in bringing CrossFire to the UK academic sector'. CHEST has arranged for central support from JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee of the higher education funding councils) which will enable these important chemistry databases to be available at low cost to UK education via the JANET network. The service will be available to any higher education institution in the UK for all its staff and students on a basis that allows institutions to make it 'free at the point of use'. The data consists of: * Beilstein data - covering the whole area of organic chemistry from the 18th century through to the present day * Gmelin data - covering inorganic and organo-metallic chemistry from 1772 to the present day and will be provided using the Beilstein CrossFire software system, based on a client/server architecture which gives comprehensive searching facilities and a modern easy to use client interface. For the first year of this 5 year agreement the service will be provided by the CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory (Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils). Both CHEST and Beilstein wish to express their thanks to the staff at CCLRC for providing the trial service over the last 6 months. Beilstein Informationssysteme GmbH, is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, and Beilstein Information Systems, Inc., has offices in Englewood, Colorado, USA. CrossFire is a trademark of Beilstein. *********************************** Yvonne Schickel Sales & Marketing Coordinator Beilstein Informationssysteme GmbH phone: +49-69-7917 410 fax: +49-69-7917 636 e-mail: yschickel@beilstein.com http://www.beilstein.com *********************************** ----- chemweb: A list for Chemical Applications of the Internet.
