Dr./Sr. Angela M. Hoffman of the University of Portland, Oregon, while researching a cure for a blight that kills hazelnut trees discovered that the trees and their nuts contain paclitaxel (Taxol). Fortuitously, Hoffman had worked previously with yew trees, the heretofore only known natural source of paclitaxel. She said this is the only reason she recognized the chemical and the potential significance of the discovery. Hoffman announced her discovery at the recent national meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco. Taxol(R), which is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb, is used to treat breast and ovarian cancers, Kaposi's sarcoma, and some forms of lung cancer. It is also under investigation for treating psoriasis, polycystic kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.
