Re: ECHET96 CD-ROM and ChemComm issue 6.
Am I correct in reading that this disc is "Win95 only"? If so (the issue hasn't surfaced here yet)
Actually, the disk is a Win-95-NT/Macintosh hybrid, that also works on the two SGI systems we have tried it on. As far as I know, the Java code on the CD runs on all OSs that support Java (even Win 3.1 does nowadays)
I stand (sit, type...) corrected. Nice to know that it is in fact a hybrid disc.
Finally, I might add that as a Mac user myself, I took great care to ensure it was Mac compatible. However, I rather think that had the entire project been run from a Win site, they would probably not have gone to the trouble. For example, does anyone know of CD-ROM mastering software that runs on Win, and produced Mac HFS partitions? I don't. A Mac/Win CD can only be produced from a Mac as far as I know.
Thanks for the effort to support MacOS, it is much appreciated. (I look forward to checking out the CD from the library!) As far as making hybrids from a Win shop, from what I understand it is possible, but the tools are not very good. Writing CD's from Windows is generally a harder proposition. One relevant piece of info is that HFS is possibly on the way out (for compatibility reasons as much as anything). There will be support for it for backwards compatibility, but Apple is mulling a change in the future. This may make such things easier in the future; stay tuned. I'll report on what our library does when we get the disc! Our librarian is pretty computer-savvy, so making it available through a locally networked CD caddy or something might be a possibility, although I think for this disc, "checking out" of the disc is more likely. -john nash -==-John R.
