We might want to contact CTICC (Computers in teaching initiative centre for Chemistry) at Liverpool, and their equivalents in say, Physics, & Medicine to see if they're interested. Maybe the CTI could orgainise a web conference, and we produce a Chemistry parallel symposium?
CTI were a trifle slow in recognising the potential of the Web (if fact, did not the Webmasters meet clash with one of theirs?). Anyway, I would not wish it to be totally dominated by teaching. Although I personally take teaching seriously, it is still regarded by many as a poor cousin to research themes and funding. If we push teaching too strongly, it may be mis-interpreted. Are we convinced that a one day conference, say starting at 10 and going till 5, and with posters, is excluded? This would ease accomodation problems and hence cost. I was asked by the CTI directorate to give a talk on the use of the Web for resource discovery at the CTI conference in Oxford. The degree of enthusiasm was high, but tempered by proper and serious concern about the quantity of resource needed to support a web site in the short term. ( I think we all accept that in the long term it will result in a resource saving.... )
From our own experience of the CTICM ( our associate unit here in Bristol ) this problem is a very real one. Sue and Gill are too overworked to even *look* at the possibilites offered by the web, let alone realise them.
I suggest the possibility of a collaboration may be the best way to encourage these centres to move positively on this.

I fully agree with this. With enthusiasm it is remarkable how much can get done. One of the benefits that the UK has is that it's small enough for people to get together and there is a long tradition of collaboration. One of the delights of the PPS course (http://www.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/PPS/index.html) was the great degree of collaboration from the participants. Amongst the achievements were lists of resources, collation of technology, and foremost the creation of a hyperglossary. Echoing the suggestion here we floated the idea of a 'molecule of the week' but it didn't get off the ground. The central thing is that there should be an easy way of mounting cgi-scripts and editing them. (Remember that almost all forms require a cgi-script to process them.) A library of cgi tools would be extremely valuable. If anyone has a database engine that can process the results that is extremely valuable (we looked at /rdb - the author gave us some help - but we didn't have enough resource). IF we can get a collection of resources I am sure that otehrs will add to it rather than duplicating it. P. Peter Murray-Rust, Glaxo Research & Dev.
