MDL Information Systems is happy to announce the release of our Chemscape Chime Netscape Plugin for the MacOS. The current release is a prototype release (version 0.8b) that supports both PowerPC (native) and 68k Macs. This version has all of the same capabilities as the current Windows 3.1/95/NT version of Chime, and incorporates some performance enhancements which make it even faster than the Windows version. Chemscape Chime for the MacOS requires Netscape Navigator 2.x or Netscape Navigator Atlas PreRelease 1. The Atlas PR1 version of Netscape Navigator fixes several Navigator 2.x bugs dealing with plugins, so it is preferable. Henry Rzepa reports that the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 Beta for the mac (which supports Netscape plugins) works with Chime also. Our early 'pre-release' testers report excellent performance on a variety of Macs (including Quadras). Future versions will continue to improve on this and incorporate additional functionality. The licensing agreement for Chemscape Chime allows FREE use for academic and personal use at home, and free evaluation by commercial users. This will continue to be the case for the 'final' Chemscape Chime release. Chemscape Chime can be downloaded from our web page at: http://www.mdli.com/chemscape/chime/ The Windows version of Chemscape Chime has been available for just over a month, and there are already a number of sites which are taking advantage of it for the display of chemical structures within web pages. I have listed a few of these below: Imperial College Dept. of Chemistry: Molecule of the Month Pages http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/motm/ Nature Structural Biology: http://structbio.nature.com Two examples from the April issue are (there are others): http://structbio.nature.com/1996-April/thesolutionstructureofhivnefre http://structbio.nature.com/1996-April/identificationoftheprimarymeta Kenyon College Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Dept.: http://www.kenyon.edu/depts/bmb/chime.htm (there is perhaps the best (currently) example of Chime's use in an 'interactive paper' here.
