Dear All, I notice with surprise that we are now seeing almost a "battle" for whose UK chemistry web information list is best. This is rather wasteful and that if the man-hour effort was directed into an another web based chemistry resource we would all benefit. Early this week we saw a very useful innovation brought in by Mark Winter on to the Sheffield ChemDex site - the searchable data base listing of all the UK chemistry academic homepages. http://www.shef.ac.uk/~chem/chemdex/ However, this morning I found a message; that the Liverpool "WWW links for Chemists site" now has that functionality. This was on top of the following message I had received from Liverpool several weeks early:
Dear Dr. Harrison,
RE: http://www.ncl.ox.ac.uk/it/cheminternet.html & http://www.ncl.ox.ac.uk/
I am writing to inform you about a WWW page at Liverpool's Chemistry dept..
This page is a list of all UK University Chemistry Department WWW pages, We are attempting to get the page adopted by all UK Chemistry Departments as a "centrally held resource" this will hopefully save upon duplication of effort, as many Universities currently hold their own incomplete lists. Should you wish to link to this page we would be happy for you to do so.
Surely, this site is just duplicating Mark Winter's excellent web site. I shall continue to use the Sheffield site as the main source of chemistry links. I wonder whether many other web-masters are doing the same. Perhaps the RSC could sponsor the ChemDex site and therefore provide a definite site that we could all use, rather than us all pointing/linking in different directions.
