Henry, Our applets work with the Java Plugin in IE6. We have tested it. I think the Java Plugin is ActiveX based, because it also supports the the conversion of JavaBeans to ActiveX components. Probably Microsoft's new turn is better for applet developers and users, because IE's built-in Java is very limited (JRE1.1) and hasn't been developed for years. If IE will not include built-in Java, then users will be forced to use the Java Plugin that improves rapidly. Of course, the Java "plugin with IE is not, I think, ActiveX and so it will not work with the latest IE. I have not tested (been away for my summer holiday!) but perhaps the most significant plugin to "break" would be the Java plugin. If anyone has tested the Java plugin with the recent IE, do let this list know.
On a related note, Microsoft were asked to comment on the situation, particularly in regard to MacOS. Their quote was
"MacIE will continue to support Netscape plug-ins at least through the next major release next year. ActiveX is the prefered technology for extending the functionality of WinIE, especially since Netscape itself is deprecating the old plug-in API in Netscape 6. You should also investigate Binary Behaviors as an alternative for your Windows plug-in."
======= It appears that they are citing Netscape API recommendations which deprecate the current way of doing things. I am not sure what the "new" API is. Is this perhaps a Microsoft "spin" on a Netscape dcument?
I do note that for a long time, Chime did not display properly with Netscape 6.0 and Mozilla, but the latest release of Netscape 6.1 does now fix this (ie the fix was by Netscape, not MDL). --
