Chime and IE 5.5 SP2 announcement

September 19, 2001 MDL Information Systems, Inc. 14600 Catalina Street San Leandro, CA 94577 Chime and Chime Pro/Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 Update On August 3, we warned our customers and user community that Microsoft had unexpectedly removed support for the plug-in interface and was therefore incompatible with existing versions of Chime and Chime Pro. At the time, we asked our customers to hold off upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or any later version. We are pleased to announce that we are now confident of delivering a short-term solution to this problem as part of Chime and Chime Pro 2.6 Service Pack 3 (SP3). We expect to release this within the next two weeks. This service pack is designed to work with IE 5.5 SP2, and we expect to be able to extend compatibility to 6.0 at a later date. When used with IE 5.5 SP2 (but not 6.0), this service pack should also have the benefit of fixing the printing problems that have been reported against previous versions of IE 5.5. For the longer term, the Chime team will be continuing to work on architectural changes that will allow Chime to be more independent of the underlying browser technologies. Chemistry lectureship at Swansea Dear Colleague The Chemistry Department at Swansea is in the process of a major refurbishment. We have also received major funding for expenditure on research equipment, such as mass, NMR, UV/visible and FTIR spectrometers, and these are either already in place or due to be installed during the next few months. We are now in the process of determining our staffing needs into the future, and as an interim measure we wish to appoint a temporary lecturer as soon as possible. The main teaching need is in inorganic chemistry, but we are keen to make a good appointment despite the short notice, and we would try to rearrange teaching responsibilities so as to tailor the duties of the appointee to fit his/her expertise as far as possible. If you know of anyone in any field of chemistry, who would be suitable for such a teaching post and is available to start in October, please encourage them to apply. Java Web Start

Glancing through the J2SDK/JRE 1_4_0 beta2 I was reading about the Java Web Start... With the havoc about JVMs in the browser, I wonder if this technology will bring back the Java to the client in a mainainable way. http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download-spec.html Anyone has some opinion about it? Should we as a community ask all chemistry vendors who send us stuff on CDs to include JRE with Web start (which is allowed without SUN's permission), so people on modems do not have to wait a few hours for JRE to be installed on their machines (at least it is available on Solaris, Linux, and Windoz on the Sun site). While I am often cynical about "community working together", we are loosing the common GUI due to vendor wars, and it is a pity to see all these Java applets go to a sink and us going back to the era of binaries crafted for each minor release of every operating system on the planet Earth... What webserver is serving these images? Is it apache, MS Webserver....? I remember hearing some dramas about the MS Webserver not being sociable with Mime types of certain file formats and Netscape (but this did not affect Internet Explorer). If this is the same type of effect: There is some option in the MS server to make the Mime types happy with Netscape if you know where to look. From memory, the information was meant to be in some obscure place in the microsoftware website - help support area. I hope this is not too confused and of some help. Hello, I too have been investigating the png format (see http://burnallgifs.org/) but find that, when they are served over the web, IE (5.5) displays them okay but Netscape (4.76) does not, although it doesn't crash. If I look at the page with the png file locally, it displays fine in both Netscape and IE... curious! To summarise: Local Server Netscape (4.76) Y N IE (5.5) Y Y Any clues? Hi folks, Has anyone noticed problems with .PNG files? One of my students did a web site using some .png files, and try to load any of his pages in Internet Explorer 4 caused the program to close down. OK - I don't usually run IE4 (or IE anything, if I can help it) but it seems that the people at the RSC are still running that. They say "As far as I'm aware we're due to upgrade our kit next year, which probably means that's when we'll upgrade our browsers to IE5." However, if you are using PNG files, it is probably useful to know about the problem. Questions and comments regarding the CPS have been cross-posted by list owners to various other relevant lists. For this reason please forgive this similar cross-posting in response. This message is posted to: {SEPTEMBER98-FORUM(a)LISTSERVER.SIGMAXI.ORG, chemweb(a)ic.ac.uk, oai-general(a)oaisrv.nsdl.cornell.edu} Firstly, I would like to thank everybody for their comments regarding the evolution of the Chemistry Preprint Server (CPS). I would like to briefly address some of the points that have been raised. Jim Till has provided some very revealing analysis of the submissions to the CPS (http://listserver.sigmaxi.org/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind01&L=september98-forum&F =l&P=29519). It will certainly be interesting to repeat this analysis when more preprints have been submitted. To this, I would like to add that each article that is submitted to the CPS has its own discussion group where users can comment on the content of the article. It is encouraging that there has been sustained use of these discussion groups. For example, 45 of the 282 preprints submitted now have more than 3 threads in their discussions. I think it will also be interesting to monitor how this feature is used. Regarding the issue of compliance with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) I would like to confirm that we have constantly referred to the initiative when developing the CPS. This is certainly a high priority because ChemWeb.com has developed the CPS as a service for the worldwide chemistry community. It is our intention that the CPS will be compliant within the next two months. I hope that this has helped to address some of the issues raised. Plugins and the EOLAS patent

http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20010816.html has an interesting story on how Microsoft may be finding it convenient to cite the Eolas patent on Browser plugins to withdraw their support for these in IE. In another quote (http://www.macintouch.com/netscapepluginapi.html) MS is claimed to say; "ActiveX is the prefered technology for extending the functionality of WinIE, especially since Netscape itself is deprecating the old plug-in API in Netscape 6." In fact, this appears a curious spin, since the Netscape 6 instructions at http://www.mozilla.org/docs/plugin.html merely talk about extending the plugin interface, and make great play of ensuring "backward compatibility" Another aspect to note is that once you update to IE 5.5 SP2 or IE6 XP, it can be very difficult to revert to an earlier version.
