This is the official solution for allow plugins (in this case Quicktime) to again be played on MS IE 5.5 SP2 and IE6 XP. One presumes a similar solution will be required for Chime and other Chemical plugins. The example below suggests that an ActiveX control is downloaded from the Internet. I presume a stand alone solution suitable for eg CDROMs will also materialise. Note how the onus is on the content developer to CHANGE their HTML page to make it work. I wonder how many will. Hi, September's MOTM is methyl jasmonate, which is the smell of jasmine and jasmine oil. Questions and comments regarding the CPS have been cross-posted by list owners to various other relevant lists. For this reason please forgive this similar cross-posting in response. This message is posted to: {SEPTEMBER98-FORUM(a)LISTSERVER.SIGMAXI.ORG, chemweb(a)ic.ac.uk, oai-general(a)oaisrv.nsdl.cornell.edu} Firstly, I would like to thank everybody for their comments regarding the evolution of the Chemistry Preprint Server (CPS). I would like to briefly address some of the points that have been raised. Jim Till has provided some very revealing analysis of the submissions to the CPS (http://listserver.sigmaxi.org/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind01&L=september98-forum&F =l&P=29519). It will certainly be interesting to repeat this analysis when more preprints have been submitted. To this, I would like to add that each article that is submitted to the CPS has its own discussion group where users can comment on the content of the article. It is encouraging that there has been sustained use of these discussion groups. For example, 45 of the 282 preprints submitted now have more than 3 threads in their discussions. I think it will also be interesting to monitor how this feature is used. Regarding the issue of compliance with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) I would like to confirm that we have constantly referred to the initiative when developing the CPS. This is certainly a high priority because ChemWeb.com has developed the CPS as a service for the worldwide chemistry community. It is our intention that the CPS will be compliant within the next two months. I hope that this has helped to address some of the issues raised. We would of course welcome any feedback or comments on the service. Please do not hesitate to contact me personally if you have any queries or comments. Plugins and the EOLAS patent

http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20010816.html has an interesting story on how Microsoft may be finding it convenient to cite the Eolas patent on Browser plugins to withdraw their support for these in IE. In another quote (http://www.macintouch.com/netscapepluginapi.html) MS is claimed to say; "ActiveX is the prefered technology for extending the functionality of WinIE, especially since Netscape itself is deprecating the old plug-in API in Netscape 6." In fact, this appears a curious spin, since the Netscape 6 instructions at http://www.mozilla.org/docs/plugin.html merely talk about extending the plugin interface, and make great play of ensuring "backward compatibility" Another aspect to note is that once you update to IE 5.5 SP2 or IE6 XP, it can be very difficult to revert to an earlier version. I am not sure what the "new" API is. Is this perhaps a Microsoft "spin" on a Netscape dcument? I do note that for a long time, Chime did not display properly with Netscape 6.0 and Mozilla, but the latest release of Netscape 6.1 does now fix this (ie the fix was by Netscape, not MDL). -- Henry Rzepa. I was simply pointing out that someone was already working on reinventing the wheel and there was no need for everyone to go into headless chicken mode just because Redmond would like to "encourage" us all to use their pet technologies. Hi, Does anyone know what has happened to www.webmolecules.com? I was going to ask this question last week, because the link had been dead for some weeks, and it had been very useful. Today, I had a deputation from our postgrads saying that the url is alive again, but it has now been taken over by a page that begins "If you are under 18 years of age or if it is illegal to view adult material in your community, please leave now." I have to get the link off all my web pages pronto - some of you may want to do the same.
