March's Molecule of the Month

Hi, The Molecule of the Month for March is ozone, and is the first MOTM to be written by a student, Eloise Stattersfield, here at Bristol. One of the options in our Chemistry degree is a computer methods course, and as part of this the students have to learn HTML and write a web page. She got the prize for the best one last year, so it's now become a MOTM. Hi, You might like to check out this site which I found recently regarding teaching Physical Chemistry via the Web: http://www.ubishops.ca/ccc/div/sci/chem and (mirror) http://cyniska.ubishops.ca/0002933 It has quite a number of nice features, including an online version of Maple which allows you to see calculations performed as real time examples. Although it does require a Java-aware browser to work properly... Laboratory Safety

Dear All, A final year student working with me is preparing an html package on safety in the chemical laboratory particularly as regards safety rules and regulations applied here in St Andrews School of Chemistry. We are also contemplating adding pages concerning accidents that have happened in other institutions, the reasons for the accidents and the effects that they had. If we prepare this additional series of pages we would consider making them available outside the university as a series of cautionary tales. WWW based questionaires

Dear all, As part of a project I am undertaking I am to become involved in the production of a WWW based questionaire/tutorial system. The envisgaed package would enable a person to establish a series of questions (a question database), via a graphical frontend, and display these to others where upon the answers are collected stored in a database. This database can then be processed at some point by the tutor/questionaire setter, again via a GUI.. We envisage developing the software in JAVA (1.2) rather than C++/CGI/JAVAScript. My question to users of this list is: 1) Do you know of existing implementations of such a system (contact names/URLs please) and 2) What features would you like to see incorporated into such a system? e.g. the specification of the Question developer frontend, and database examiner. Clasical Chemical Samples

To all interested in old original samples of chemicals, The Chemistry Department of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris has an amazing collection of some natural products isolated well over 100 years ago, particularly some of the earliest samples of "fatty" compounds. For example I think I saw the first isolated sample of cholesterol by I think Fremy in their museum. Incidentally, their museum doubles as their lecture room with cabinets around the walls containing these historic samples and what is more remarkable there is an original _pre Mendeleev_ Periodic Table on view!
