<bold>Chemistry Journal to Launch on Internet </bold>The first issue of the Internet Journal of Chemistry (IJC) will be published on the Internet on 1 January 1998. Aimed at encouraging global interaction within the chemical community, IJC will present the latest chemical research findings alongside development of chemical Internet resources. Coverage will include the latest research in all disciplines of chemistry; developments of Internet resources specifically for chemists; plus reviews of the most relevant chemistry WWW sites. With publication not limited to page space, IJC will also encourage interactive comment and debate on published papers using electronic resources. Benefits for readers of IJC are multifold: Publication on the Internet permits colour graphics, video and animation, chemical structures and data that is not normally associated with print products. This includes interactive tools enabling the readers to manipulate structures and data. Papers featured in IJC will be peer-reviewed and will be published on the Internet as they are accepted, aiming to bring the article to the reader as quickly as possible. All articles will be available in HTML and the Journal will also provide long-term archive retrieval opportunities, both on the Internet and by alternative means, such as CD-ROM. First year subscriptions to IJC will be free of charge. Thereafter competitive annual subscription rates will be charged. Published by Infotrust, Ltd., IJC's Editor, Steven Bachrach comments "The principal aim of The Internet Journal of Chemistry is to provide an electronic venue for the communication of current chemical research, with enabling tools that allow for presentation of information that cannot be distributed in print. In addition, IJC will encourage the development of Internet resources for chemists. This includes news of Internet databases and tools; new software for handling Internet data; visualization tools and the like. "IJC is a fully electronic Journal, committed to the electronic medium. As such, IJC will feature "living documents" - an interactive service for readers and contributors alike which will encourage comment. Readers will be able to customize the look-and-feel of the Journal, allowing each readers to view articles in an environment most suited to themselves." apologies for multiple postings Joint RSC CIG/CSA Autumn meeting Chemical Structures and Networking: An Overview of Recent Developments A meeting organised jointly by the RSC Chemical Information Group and the Chemical Structure Association Burlington House, London, Thursday, October 16th, 1997 Rapid development continues in the application of increasingly sophisticated computer technology, both hardware and software, to the location, retrieval, registration, manipulation and exploitation of chemical structure and related data. These developments are helping users cope with the new demands arising from the continuing growth in the volumes and complexity of data, especially from such techniques as combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening. All of this is taking place alongside the continuing growth in the use of Internet/Intranet technology. Most of the new developments allow the use of a browser interface, and many of them are accessible via the Internet. This meeting, being run jointly by the RSC Chemical Information Group and the Chemical Structure Association, will review recent developments and trends in the availability of tools for manipulating chemical structure and related data. Key presentations will provide overviews which will be supplemented by presentations and demonstrations from major systems suppliers. After the presentations, there will be a wine and cheese reception, which will provide a further opportunity to network and to view the various demonstrations. This one-day meeting presents a highly cost-effective way of keeping up to date with this fast-moving field. The cost is just 20 to members of the CIG or CSA and 25 to non-members. Video for review

As Media Review editor for the journal The Chemical Educator, I receive various items for review in the journal. I now have a copy of "Interpreting Infra-Red and NMR Spectra", a video in the "Chemistry for Schools" series from the University of Liverpool. A previous reviewer, at a school, has commented that he feels the video is most suited to the 1st year University level, so I am now looking for a reviewer at University for this video. A review of between 400 and 1000 words is required for publication, and would be expected within 8-10 weeks of receipt of the video. No payment is provided, but you get the video to keep. The video is in standard UK format, so is not viewable in North America. If you are interested, please e-mail me with a (very brief!) outline of your background. I can provide further details to anyone interested. Molecule of the Month

Hi, This month's MOTM comes from Jamaica and has been provided by Robert Lancashire. The molecule is Hexol, which is an organometallic complex important because it was instrumental in the development of modern coordination chemistry. Direct URL: http://wwwchem.uwimona.edu.jm:1104/MOTM/hexol/hexol.html MOTM URL: http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/Chemistry/MOTM/motm.htm This MOTM is Chime-enhanced, and also includes an example of the use of the JCAMP plug-in for Netscape, which allows spectra (IR, UV, NMR, etc) to be interactive (zoom in/out, give spectral line positions, etc), as well as ultimately to be linked to the 3D structure data. The plug-in can be downloaded from the Jamaica site, or I've put a zipped copy in our local archive at: http://www.tlchm.bris.ac.uk/shared/npjcamp.zip (Win95/NT with Netscape only, unzip and place the dll into the Netscape plugins directory). Apparently the next version of Chime will have the JCAMP plug-in already built into it.
