The simplest method I have found is to use Softshell's free ChemWeb software which reads ChemDraw files and saves as GIF files. ChemWeb is effectively ChemIntosh but restricted to producing low-resolution images. ChemWeb can be downloaded from www.softshell.com. Could anyone suggest how I might do this please? > The methods which I have used very successfully (on a Mac) are: (a) (rather round about route) create web pages in MS-Word, save them as RTF files and then use RTFtoHTML to convert them into HTML. We had images on ChemDraw for a Mac and so we opened the .pict files up on the software for a scanner attached to the Mac. The scanner s/w supports gif/bmp files. It's a long winded way but it seemed the only way. MS-Word Assistant wouldn't do the conversion as it should have done. Java and Firewalls

>From the announcement of the new release of Chemical Markup Language, and other discussions on the list it seems that Java is becoming an integral part of the chemical web. However, it appears that moving down this road could exclude many people from our sites. The issue is one of corporate firewalls. Many companies are not willing to let in 'live' code to their networks in order to ensure the security of their systems. For example, in a recent discussion on the CHMINF-L discussion group about CAS/STN Easy Edition, Rick Williams of Pfizer said: "On the more important (from our point of view) issue, about which you had no comment, what's with the Java routine? We simply cannot, at this time, offer to our clients any resource which is manipulated by or depends on programmatic intervention from outside the corporate firewall." I'm sure that Pfizer isn't the only company with this policy. There are many advantages to the Java approach, but companies seem suspicious of it even with reassurances about the built-in safety mechanisms in Java. ANNOUNCE: CML (Chemical Markup Language) V1.0

CML V1.0 is finally ready and posted and available for anyone who wishes to develop applications. It's free, as are the supporting java classes, and we are already starting to build a community of developers. CML V1.0 has many new features, and has vastly expanded its potential applications. I have tackled many different disciplines and files and believe that CML is powerful enough to represent most of them, and certainly the chemical/* MIME types that I'm grafting through. The greatest enhancement is that CML is completely supported by Java classes. It's also compatible with the latest SGML developments on the Internet, so it represents a single universal mechanism for realising chemical/* MIME philosophy in being able to send and receive molecules regardless of the platform or software. It is also far easier to extend and develop and maintain software in Java than other languages. I would be interested in hearing from anyone interested in adding CML to their toolkit. It's particularly suitable for processing legacy information, database submission and retrieval, postprocessing and visualisation of program output, glossary development, scientific publication, searching of semi-structured information, etc. CML is being offered in close collaboration with the Open Molecule Foundation, a non-profit consortium of those interested in developing object-oriented approaches to molecules and their interoperability. Re the use of Java in developing Internet applications. I do not have any direct experience in developing with Java, but the following article might provide some relevant information since it discusses a Java application that involves more than applets. The article appeared in the Washington Business section of the Washington Post last week: "Untangling the Web, Automatically: Tiny Fairfax Firm's Software May Make Hunting for Information Vastly Easier," Washington Business, Jan. 3, 1997, p. B10-B11. (The article should also be on the Post's Web site at http://www.washingtonpost.com; sorry, but I don't have a specific URL.) This article describes TransactNet's new Java automatic query application. The software, called Web Interface Toolkit, will enable Web users to automatically track data on specific Web sites. Free test copies are available on the company's Web site [no URL given in the article, but I have been informed it is http://www.transactnet.com/products.html] Before the software can be used, however, it must be customized to a particular organization's needs.
