Its produced using Kinemage (an standard protein display program)
and "animated gifs". Those interested in producing these on a Mac,
should use GIFBuilder (http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/ectoc/progs/GB.hqx)
The latest version will even take a quicktime
movie and convert it. Also GraphicConverter 2.4 does this now.
I am unaware of any Windows program that can do this.

Hot on the heels of the equation editor comes this;
http://www.webcom.com/~tripos2/SandF.html
""Sketch & Fetch" is a Web-based application built with Java applets.
Sketch & Fetch provides a simple WebSketcher(tm) to (1) enter a 2D query,
(2) choose a UNITY database and (3) initiate a search. Structures matching
the query are returned and displayed in a 3D viewer in the page (also a
Java applet). The structures can be rotated and manipulated. "

> FOR THE INTERNET
>
> Waterloo, Canada - March 29, 1996 - Poliplus Software is announcing
> the release of 'EqnViewer' in Java for the internet.
>
> 'EqnViewer' is a simple and familiar to use equation viewing software
> written in Java for the Internet. With EqnViewer, WEB Pages can contain
> equations without the need of GIF images.
>
> EqnViewer uses familiar notation to represent equations. The notation
> resembles the syntax used in hand-held calculators and other mathematical
> software.
>
> Mathematical Structure is maintained allowing EqnViewer to be much more
> than just an equation viewing software. Poliplus Software plans to release
> additional software April 10/1996 that will take advantage of Java's
> interactive capabilities. Please stay tunned for this exciting release.
>
>
> Features of EqnViewer:
> ----------------------
>
> - Uses very little memory and the code size is small.
>
> - Maintains Mathematical Structure for ease of connection
> to other systems.
>
> - Graphical display of Mathematical expressions.
>
> - Supports Greek alphabet in plain English form. Strings
> (Variables and Function Names) can be composed of mixed alphabets.
>
> - Supports arithmetic operators: +,-, /, *, ^. Relations: =, <>,
> <, >, <=, >=, =>, ==, :=. Symbolic constants: imag, inf, pi and e.
>
> - Functions support : supports any user supplied function such as:
> sin, cos, tan, asin, acos, atan, cosh, sinh, tanh, exp, etc.
> and draws properly the following functions :
> logb, abs, deg, sqrt, nroot, plusminus, and perc.
>
> - Calculus support : Derivative, Integral, Limit (with plus and
> minus directions).
>
> - Algebra support: Matrix of unlimited size, transpose function.
>
> - Table support: Table of unlimited size.
>
> - Finite support: sum, prod, factorial, and comb.
